    Scholars are on to their second book of the year, The Boy Who Harnessed the Wind-Young Reader's Edition. This book will introduce the life of William Kamkwamba and the invention of electricity in his village in Africa. We will provide a class copy of the book for the scholars to use during class. In Unit 1, students will read the first nine chapters of the anchor text, building background on William Kamkwamba and the problems William’s community faced in rural Malawi, in a village with limited resources and access to education. Through two Language Dives using key sentences in the anchor text and a close read of a supplemental text, students practice identifying the central idea, citing textual evidence, analyzing how individual sentences contribute to the development of a text’s central ideas, and determining the meaning of words and phrases in a text.

     

    **Please encourage your scholars to read for 30–40 minutes on a nightly basis.**

    Math 

    In Math, students will dive deeper into their study of ratios and percentages with a focus on converting units and comparing speeds and prices.

     

    SCIENCE 

    We have been “HEATING UP” during our second quarter in science. Students have been able to show their understanding of how heat transfers from warmer objects to cooler objects. We have used the MakerSpace for our science labs and used our outdoor environment to make connections with these topics. Scholars have also taken the time to make real world connections with our penguin project and the effects of global warming.

    During our next unit, scholars will be responsible for understanding the properties of waves and the wavelike property of energy in earthquakes, light and sound. Scholars will also discuss the relationship between visible light, the electromagnetic spectrum, and sight. Lastly, scholars will explain the effects of electromagnetic waves on various materials, which include absorption, scattering, and change in temperature. We will make connections with our previous unit of Heat Energy to have a full understanding of this topic. We are very excited about our next unit on Waves!

    Social Studies

    Our scholars are currently learning about Mesopotamia and Ancient Egypt. Learning new vocabulary terms has been the main focus throughout our instruction. We will begin studying about Ancient China and India towards the end of November.
