Dear Parents and Guardians,
We are excited for another great year at Lake Wylie Elementary School! Our goal is to foster a positive and respectful learning environment which is crucial for the growth and development of students and staff alike. By emphasizing good character traits and promoting leadership qualities, we want to help shape the future leaders of tomorrow.
Open and effective communication between the school and parents is vital for a successful educational journey. When parents are involved and engaged in their child's education, it can significantly impact their academic and personal growth. Building a strong partnership between the school and parents can lead to a supportive network that helps students thrive both inside and outside the classroom. We will continue to communicate and foster a positive relationship with parents to help support your child’s success while at Lake Wylie.
Every student is unique, and tailoring the educational experience to meet their individual needs is essential. By providing a nurturing and encouraging atmosphere, students will feel empowered to explore their interests, build their strengths, and overcome challenges.
With a dedicated focus on positive behaviors, character development, and parent involvement, we are setting the stage for a successful and enriching experience for everyone involved.
Here are some of the positive behavior tools we use every day:
SAIL CEREMONY
At the end of every quarter, parents are invited to come to the classroom to see the End of Module Performance Task or the End of Unit (math) finished products. Awards will be given for Achievement in Math, Achievement in Reading, A/AB Honor Roll, Pirate Award! (superstar student- could be for behavior/good choices), Growth in Reading, and Growth in Math.
SEL TIME
Every class will begin their day with a Social, Emotional Learning time. Lessons are part of the Caring Schools Community curriculum. We will also continue to learn about Growth Mindset and developing a positive attitude towards self-efficacy, self-management, and engaging in our learning.
PBIS REWARDS
Each class will utilize the Positive Behavior Intervention and Supports (PBIS) Rewards App to track student behavior. This system will encourage students to receive feedback on both positive and negative behaviors. Also, the system can be used to communicate with parents regarding student work and behaviors.
PIRATE BUCKS
Students can receive Pirate Bucks virtually for demonstrating respect, responsibility, safety, and being ready to learn through their behavior. Students will have the opportunity to receive Pirate Bucks from any staff member. Everyone should attempt to look for good behavior from students across the school to receive these Pirate Bucks. Students can redeem their Pirate Bucks will be used at the school store, class store,bi- quarterly events, and raffles. Students can redeem their Pirate Bucks on their grade level’s designated day. Students in Kindergarten and First Tuesday, 2nd and 3rd Wednesday, and 4th and 5th on Thursday.
STUDENT CLUBS
Students will have the opportunity to participate in various activities that will allow them to demonstrate their leadership skills around the school.
AARG AWARDS
At the end of every week, Ms. Bryant or Ms. Patel will do a selfie with students who show growth in their literacy and math weekly goals. Any student that CONSISTENTLY exhibits Achievement in Literacy or Math Fluency, Ambitious Goals set and achieved, Responsible for Learning, and/or Growth in Learning. Teams will set goals of the growth students need to make each week. Teachers will notify parents once their child has earned an AARG award. When the student has reached 3 AARGs they get to take a selfie.
SCHOOL COUNSELING
Our school counselors will continue to provide guidance lessons and offer support to our students. In these lessons, they will continue to reinforce the behaviors and character education described above. In addition to these guidance lessons, our counselors will work with students in small groups and individually to support students’ specific skills that promote positive internal growth. Assigned Counselors are listed below:
Pre-K through 2nd Grades: Michelle Bukuts; michellej.bukuts@cms.k12.nc.us
3rd through 5th Grades: Kathryn Swaim; kathryng.swaim@cms.k12.nc.us
THE LAKE WYLIE WAY
We will continue to utilize a progressive discipline plan that relies upon appropriate consequences based on behavior. We will maintain a focus on the CMS Code of Conduct to ensure positive behaviors are in line with the district’s vision for student success. We will use our Behavior Matrix called "The Lake Wylie Way" to reinforce student behavior. Please click this link to see the school-wide expectations that correlate to our LWES Way.
Thank you for all of your support of Lake Wylie and our efforts to foster and encourage positive behaviors in our students. If you have any questions about our character development program, please feel free to contact me at joycelynd.Bryant@cms.k12.nc.us.
