High School Mathematics

All students will complete the sequence of NC Math 1 through NC Math 3, followed by a fourth math course that aligns with a student's post-high school goals. This may include NC Math 4, Discrete Mathematics for Computer Sciences, AP Pre-Calculus or CCRG Math. In addition, students can prepare for college-level courses and earn college credit through Advanced Placement (AP) These additional college-level math courses include AP Calculus AB, AP Calculus BC, and AP Statistics.

The high school mathematics course of study is based upon NC Math Standards adopted by the North Carolina State Board of Education in June 2016. The standards for the fourth math course were revised and adopted in August 2019 and implemented in 2020-2021.

Math Curriculum

CMS Math courses are based on building a conceptual understanding of N.C. Math Standards, leading to procedural fluency and applying the math in context. Rote memorization of facts and procedures is not prioritized, as we aim to ensure our students are flexible, mathematical thinkers. The NC Math Standards are divided into two equally important parts: the Standards for Mathematical Practice and the Standards for Mathematical Content. The 8 Standards for Mathematical Practice describe the characteristics and habits of mind that all mathematically proficient students exhibit:

  1. Make sense of problems and persevere in solving them.
  2. Reason abstractly and quantitatively.
  3. Construct viable arguments and critique the reasoning of others.
  4. Model with mathematics.
  5. Use appropriate tools strategically.
  6. Attend to precision.
  7. Look for and make use of structure.
  8. Look for and express regularity in repeated reasoning.

The Standards for Mathematical Practice will be applied throughout each course and, together with the Standards for Mathematical Content, will ensure that students experience mathematics as a coherent, useful, and logical subject. The Standards for Mathematical Content for high school are divided into six conceptual categories: Number and Quantity, Algebra, Functions, Modeling, Geometry, and Statistics and Probability.
