Dr. Melissa Balknight has dedicated more than 30 years to public education, serving in leadership roles within two of North Carolina’s largest school districts. Throughout her career, she has focused on aligning standards, resources, people and systems to accelerate student outcomes and create meaningful opportunities for every learner.

A defining strength of Dr. Balknight’s leadership is her ability to design and adapt service-delivery models based on the human capital and financial resources available to a district. Her approach is grounded in a simple but powerful premise: effective systems must be designed around the needs of students while ensuring that people and resources are strategically aligned to deliver results. This work has been particularly important in navigating the challenges facing public education before, during and after the COVID-19 pandemic.

Dr. Balknight is equally committed to building strong community partnerships and meaningful connections with families. She believes that sustainable improvement happens when school systems listen to their communities, understand the aspirations of families and create opportunities that reflect the diverse needs of students. Her passion for community engagement has helped her successfully develop and refine school choice options across multiple districts, expanding equitable access and helping families identify the school environment that best fits their children.

She partners with a strong leadership team to advance the district’s academic priorities and accelerate student achievement. Under her leadership, Charlotte-Mecklenburg Schools has experienced several years of historic academic gains, with recent outcomes surpassing pre-pandemic performance levels. The district has also received national attention as one to watch for its rapid acceleration of student outcomes across student groups.

Dr. Balknight believes accelerating student outcomes requires three essential elements: strong systems and high-performing teams; a school assignment and choice framework that empowers families to select the best fit for their children; and strong academic practices that ensure every student receives a high-quality core educational experience. She views these elements not as isolated initiatives, but as interconnected components of a public education system designed to serve every child well.

For Dr. Balknight, the work is deeply personal. As the parent of a public school student, she understands the hopes, questions and expectations families bring to their schools. She believes the work of public education is never finished — it is an ongoing commitment to improving the experience and outcomes of every student.

Her commitment to educational excellence is grounded in a strong academic foundation, and her educational journey reflects a lifelong dedication to learning, leadership and service, values that continue to shape her approach to supporting students, educators and school communities. She earned a doctoral degree in educational leadership from Gardner-Webb University and an educational specialist degree in educational administration and supervision from Winthrop University. Additionally, she earned master’s and bachelor’s degrees in agricultural education and agricultural business respectively from North Carolina Agricultural & Technical State University.

Outside of her professional responsibilities, Dr. Balknight values time with her husband, Ricky, and their son, Ricky, who is thriving as a high school junior. Her personal philosophy is one she carries into both life and leadership: every day is a new day, and every day should be amazing — even when the day is challenging.

For Dr. Balknight, public education is more than a profession; it is her life’s work. She approaches each day with optimism, purpose and a deep belief in what is possible when talented people come together around a shared commitment to students and families. And, by her own measure, she enjoys every minute of it.
