Career Development Month — recognized in November — highlights the importance of career awareness, exploration and readiness.
Charlotte-Mecklenburg Schools offers several pathways in Career and Technical Education (CTE) in middle and high school that equip students with the 21st century skills needed for the global economy. More than 30,000 students take advantage of these pathways, gaining hands-on, real world experiences that align to the ever-changing workforce.
CTE also focuses on career development for all students, and CMS has 24 middle school career development coordinators and 72 high school CTE coordinators who work to ensure that students understand the different career clusters and pathways CMS offers in order to have a plan for enrollment, employment or enlistment. Coordinators conduct career and college fairs, expose students to workplaces and hands-on experiences through field trips and ensure classrooms are exposed to guest speakers. They also work with students to secure internships, pre-apprenticeships and post-secondary employment opportunities.
“Middle school career development coordinators and high school CTE coordinators are the bridge between education and opportunity,” said Ashlee’ Campbell, CTE director. “They empower students to discover their passions, develop real-world skills and connect with meaningful career pathways.
“Beyond the classroom, coordinators actively engage with local businesses and community partners to bring resources and experiences that prepare students for success in both college and careers," added Campbell. "Their work ensures that every student has access to the tools and connections needed to thrive in a rapidly changing workforce.”
