CMS Launches “I’ve Got Your Back” Initiative to Support Student Mental and Emotional Wellness

As Charlotte-Mecklenburg Schools continues its commitment to educating the whole child, the district is launching a new mental health awareness initiative this school year called I’ve Got Your Back.

The program is designed to raise awareness of the resources and support available to students and families while reinforcing the importance of mental and emotional wellness.

The launch comes as CMS prepares to recognize October as Mental Health Awareness Month (and National Bullying Prevention Month), providing an opportunity to focus on the social, emotional and mental well-being of students across the district.

“Mental and emotional wellness is just as important as physical health,” said Dr. Vernessa Bowles, director of student wellness and academic support. “At Charlotte-Mecklenburg Schools, we are committed to helping students thrive academically, socially and emotionally so they can reach their full potential and continue growing each day.”

The I’ve Got Your Back initiative is part of CMS's ongoing investment in Social and Emotional Learning (SEL). Throughout the school year, students and families will receive information about mental health resources through school communications, district platforms and classroom learning experiences that support social and emotional development.

As part of the initiative, students and families will have access to Healing Conversations, a video series featuring students and staff sharing their experiences and discussing important wellness topics. They will also receive Mindful Moments, practical tips and strategies for practicing mindfulness at school and at home. Together, these resources are designed to spark meaningful conversations, build awareness and provide support for emotional well-being.

Students also will participate in activities and discussions that promote emotional wellness, healthy relationships, kindness and bullying prevention. These efforts are designed to help students build resilience, strengthen connections with others and understand where they can turn for support when needed.

CMS encourages families to take an active role in supporting their child's well-being. If a student needs mental or emotional support, families are encouraged to contact their school counselor, social worker or school psychologist.

Throughout October, families can also find additional information and learning opportunities through the CMS Family Portal  and Family Academy Lunch and Learn webinars, which will feature resources and programs focused on mental health awareness, emotional wellness and bullying prevention.

By launching I've Got Your Back, CMS is strengthening its commitment to ensuring that every student feels seen, supported and connected. Together, schools and families can create a culture where students know they have trusted adults and resources available to help them succeed both inside and outside the classroom.

Additional resources covering a variety of topics also are available for families such as:

  • School-Based Mental Health Services
  • Bullying Prevention Resources
