Beyond the Screen

The landscape of education is continuously evolving, offering students more pathways to success than ever before. Among these, virtual schooling has emerged as a powerful and flexible model that not only delivers a rigorous education but also builds critical real-world skills. For many students, the virtual environment provides a unique combination of independence, personalized support, and flexibility that allows them to thrive.

The New Classroom

One of the most significant advantages of a virtual environment is the flexibility it offers. While many programs, especially for younger students, include synchronous (live) instruction, older students in grades 10-12 often move to a more asynchronous model.

"Most of my classes are asynchronous... they give you the assignments for the day or for the week and you can just work it on your own pace."

- Amy Ramirez, Junior at Charlotte-Mecklenburg Virtual School (CMVS)

This structure, which can include rigorous courses like AP World History and Honors Biology, fosters a profound sense of academic independence. "This is a really good opportunity for students to learn how to self advocate," noted Meredith Mobley, CMVS educator. "It's a great opportunity for them to learn how to self manage their time."

This flexibility is not just about academics; it's about life. Students involved in high-level extracurricular activities, sports, or pre-professional programs find this model allows them to pursue their passions without sacrificing their education. It's a structure built on time management and limiting your distractions, skills that are invaluable in college and the modern workforce.

High-Tech, High-Touch

A common misconception about virtual schooling is that it's isolating. In reality, the opposite is often true. The virtual model frequently features smaller class sizes and more direct communication, leading to stronger bonds. "We find that our students often have stronger relationships with their teachers than they do in the traditional school environment," a program leader stated.

"One of the biggest differences is that personal relationship. You just have more time to cultivate it."

- Meredith Mobley, Charlotte-Mecklenburg Virtual School educator

This sentiment is backed by data. A 2024 survey of over 27,000 virtual school parents found that 97% agree their student's teachers are supportive, and 95% find them easily accessible. Students agree, with one noting, "It just feels like I have a better connection with my teachers cause I can just be focused on what I need to."

At the same time, students are inherently building a skill set that is no longer optional: digital literacy. They don't just learn their course material; they become well versed in different applications, increasing their computer literacy and comfort with the digital platforms that govern the 21st-century world.

A Record of Rigor and Success

This independence and flexibility do not come at the cost of academic rigor. Students in virtual programs tackle high-level coursework, including AP and college-level classes, all while being held to high expectations by their teachers.  Students are given the tools to succeed, and they rise to the challenge.

Virtual schooling provides a focused, flexible, and rigorous environment that empowers students to take ownership of their education and prepare for life after graduation. It is a powerful testament to the fact that learning can, and should, look different for every student.

This program is only one of many opportunities students are offered at Charlotte-Mecklenburg Schools. From school choice programs and career-focused academies to traditional neighborhood schools, our district is committed to providing a diverse portfolio of options to fit every student's unique needs and learning style.
