Over the summer, the Charlotte Symphony Orchestra (CSO) took a step toward enriching music education in Charlotte-Mecklenburg Schools by donating instruments to Rocky River High School, South Academy of International Languages, and James Martin Middle School. This generous contribution is more than a gift—it’s an investment in the future of students and the vitality of school music programs.
Filling Critical Gaps
For many schools, maintaining a robust music program can be challenging when instruments are scarce or in disrepair. At Rocky River High School, the donation filled a pressing need for guitars, ensuring that both beginner and intermediate classes could continue without interruption.
“We were gonna buy about six guitars, and I think we received six or seven. That really helped cause there's a few guitars that are actually in need of repair as well. Some of them were beyond repair, and so it really helped fill that gap.”
- Peter Case, Music Teacher, Rocky River High School
Similarly, at South Academy of International Languages and James Martin Middle School these instruments are opening doors for students who might otherwise miss the opportunity to learn and perform.
Why Music Education Matters
Music education is far more than an extracurricular activity—it’s a transformative experience.
"When I'm playing Spanish, since I’m from Puerto Rico, I feel more connected with my people. It’s something that really boosted my confidence and just made me into a better person.”
- Jesus Cubi, Junior, Rocky River High School
Research consistently shows that learning music enhances cognitive development, improves academic performance, and fosters creativity. Beyond academics, music builds confidence, strengthens social bonds, and provides a sense of belonging. For many students, the band room or guitar class becomes a safe space where they can express themselves and connect with peers.
A Community Effort
This initiative reflects CSO’s commitment to making music accessible to all students, regardless of background. By partnering with schools and donors, they are helping programs thrive and ensuring that instruments reach the hands of eager learners. These efforts underscore the belief that music is not a luxury—it’s an essential part of education and personal growth.
Together, we are creating endless possibilities for young musicians and reinforcing the importance of arts in education.
