Three high schools took home state basketball championship titles after winning games at the Lawrence Joel Veterans Memorial Coliseum in March.

Mallard Creek High won its first championship title for the women’s team in school history after defeating Hoggard High School 49-45 in overtime. Senior Jazmeen Stone was the Sportsmanship Award winner, senior My’Asia Young was recognized as the Most Outstanding Player and senior Camri Hobbs received the MVP award.

North Mecklenburg High was named the 7A Women's State Champions after defeating Southern Durham 65-38. Senior Stephanie Mobley received the Sportsmanship Award, junior Morgan Knox was named the Most Outstanding Player and junior Lenise Joseph was named MVP, Meck Power 6 Player of the Year, District 9 Player of the Year and was named to the North Carolina Basketball Coaches Association's All-State First Team.

Jennifer Baker, athletic Director at North Mecklenburg, was also named District 6 Coach of the Year and the North Carolina Basketball Coaches Association’s All-State Coach of the Year.

“It was a great journey to reach the championship game for the first time in 40 years,” said Baker. “North Meck last won a girl’s basketball state championship in 1986. It is with a great sense of pride and accomplishment to bring this title back to our school and community.”

The West Charlotte High men’s basketball team won a “nail-biting” game against Hoggard High after sophomore Kaharri Coleman delivered a perfect pass to sophomore Sean Johnson who hit the game-winning shot. This is the school’s seventh North Carolina High School Athletic Association's state championship.
