Robert Folk, principal at Myers Park High School, was named the 2027 CMS Principal of the Year. The surprise announcement was made on Oct. 1 in front of the school’s student center in the quad where Folk was surrounded by family, colleagues and lunch tables filled with students holding up signs of his face with his smile.
“I’m a little overwhelmed, but so honored to represent CMS as the principal of the year and also honored to represent all of the other principals in the district and staff in the district who work so hard each and every day,” said Folk.
Folk’s philosophy on leadership was shaped by his father, who played a vital role in the formation of Charlotte-Mecklenburg Schools through consolidation and desegregation.
“Throughout his career, he led with integrity, kindness and a steadfast belief that every child matters and deserves an equal and equitable educational opportunity,” said Folk. “His example continues to inspire the way I serve, lead and advocate for students each day.”
As the principal of one of the largest high schools in North Carolina, Folk said the most challenging part of the job is balancing the diverse needs of every student while ensuring they feel seen, supported and valued. It’s also the most rewarding.
Myers Park’s school culture is rooted in community. Folk said they’re more than a school. They are a family.
“You have extended a legacy and created a legacy of your own,” said Jennifer Willoughby, assistant superintendent of High School Performance Area A. “What you do for the school community and what you have poured out of yourself to ensure that all students are successful is certainly deserving of this honor.”
“At Myers Park High School, every student matters,” said Folk. “We are committed to creating an environment where students feel supported, challenged and inspired. Our goal is to provide the best educational experience possible while helping each student reach their full potential and prepare for a bright future.”
