CMS names its Principal of the Year

Danielle Belton, principal at Paw Creek Elementary, is the 2022-2023 Charlotte-Mecklenburg Schools Principal of the Year. The news was announced in a surprise ceremony in the school’s gymnasium Oct. 21.

“It is a privilege to be your principal every day,” Belton said to students in the gym. “And staff, it is a privilege to lead you every day. This honor is for everyone.”

“Leadership is never about being the best,” Interim Superintendent Hugh Hattabaugh said to Belton during the announcement. “It’s about making those around you better, and you do that each and every day here at Paw Creek.”

Belton is in her ninth year as principal at Paw Creek. She began her educational career at Garinger High as an English teacher in 2004. As a student who also attended a Title I high school, Belton knew those were the schools she wanted to work in and tap into their “untapped potential.”
