New Cellphone Policy

In an effort to improve student attentiveness and academic achievement, Rocky River High School will implement a new policy of student cell phone collection at the beginning of each instructional period. This policy is designed to minimize distractions, increase student engagement, and ensure all students can fully engage in learning.

According to Rule 5 of the CMS Code of Conduct, students must keep all personal technology devices off and away during instructional time unless they have permission to use their devices for a school administration-approved educational purpose.

Beginning on 11/18/24, all phones (and smartwatches) will be collected and secured at the beginning of each block and then returned at the end of each block (During third block, phones will be returned prior to lunch and collected after lunch.). Laptops and tablets must be placed in backpacks. If a backpack is not an option, the laptop/tablet must be placed in the secure location designated by the teacher. All devices must be powered off before they are collected and secured.

Technology Consequences

  • If a student has a phone or smartwatch but does not surrender the phone or smartwatch (or put away/keep away the laptop or tablet), the student will be removed from class and will be eligible for out-of-school suspension (OSS) for insubordination (Rule 7: Insubordination). This also applies to students who have out any of these devices in the hallway or restroom during instructional time.

  • Parents/guardians will be notified about the infraction and suspension via email or Parent Square.

Technology Liability

  • Per CMS policy, Rocky River High School and RRHS personnel will not be held responsible or liable (monetary value or replacement) for theft, loss, or damage to personal technology devices or other electronic devices brought onto CMS property.
