Representatives from the U.S. Department of Education's Office of Special Education Programs (OSEP) toured classes at East Mecklenburg High on May 8. Valerie Williams, director of OSEP, and Dante Allen, commissioner of the Rehabilitation Services Administration, were in Charlotte for a conference, but they wanted to learn more about the wonderful happenings in and around Charlotte-Mecklenburg Schools and requested a visit.
Their focus is on the Three Es: Enroll, Employ, Enlist, which they were able to see in action. East Mecklenburg students in our Extensions and Occupational Course of Study program showcased their skill set in the areas of communication, life skills and workforce training. The guests were accompanied by Principal Rick Parker; Dr. Heather Lemmons, executive director of Exceptional Children Services; Miyoshi Mack, high school program manager; and Eric Bailey, project manager.
“We had a fantastic visit with our guests, who were able to tour classrooms at East Meck and meet our incredible students and teachers," Dr. Lemmons said. "They were impressed by our commitment to our students and our belief in the three Es!”
OSEP is dedicated to improving results for infants, toddlers, children and youth with disabilities ages birth through 21 by providing leadership and financial support to assist states and local districts.
