CMS magnet schools win MSA National Merit Awards

Nine magnet schools in Charlotte-Mecklenburg Schools have been named National Merit Award winners by Magnet Schools of America (MSA), the national association for magnet and theme-based schools. The awards are given to schools that demonstrate outstanding dedication to academic standards, curricular innovation and diversity.

The following are the winners, with school themes and categories:

Merit Award of Excellence

  • Idlewild Elementary School (Learning Immersion and Talent Development-Program Within a School)

  • Rea Farms STEAM Academy (STEAM-Whole School)

  • South Academy of International Languages (Language Immersion-Whole School)

Merit Award of Distinction

  • Billingsville-Cotswold Elementary School (International Baccalaureate-Program Within a School)

  • Elizabeth Traditional Elementary School (Leadership-Whole School)

  • Piedmont Middle School (International Baccalaureate-Whole School)

  • McClintock Middle School (STEAM-Whole School)

  • Paw Creek Elementary School (Computer Science and STEM Immersion-Whole School)

  • Tuckaseegee Elementary School (Learning Immersion and Talent Development-Program Within a School)

Winners will receive their awards at a ceremony during the Magnet Schools of America’s national conference April 7-10 in Nashville.

To receive a national merit award, members of Magnet Schools of America must submit a detailed application that is scored by a panel of educators. These schools are judged and scored on their demonstrated ability to raise student academic achievement, promote racial and socioeconomic diversity, provide integrated curricula and instruction, and create strong family and community partnerships that enhance the school’s magnet theme.
