Barnette Elementary students look to the future at annual career fair

Barnette Elementary School held its second annual career fair for 375 third through fifth grade students on March 20. There were 22 vendors – parent volunteers and community members – who told students about their careers and the qualifications needed for those pathways.
School counselor Andrea LeClair, who started a career fair at her previous school, continued the idea when she transferred to Barnette last year. She and school counselor Kasey Boudreau collaborated with the community to make the fair a reality.
“We had everything from trade careers to medical jobs that require significant training, and had a broad perspective of their future options,” LeClair said. “We had a baker that they were very interested in. They learned how intricate that work is and how to apply what they’re learning now for their future.”
Other featured careers included art, engineering, law enforcement and firefighting, as well as vital careers students may not normally think about, such as the U.S. Postal Service and pest control. They also had Career Fair Passports, where they documented their thoughts on careers and answered reflection questions around their skills and development.
