Food Lion and Second Harvest Food Bank of Metrolina hosted a food distribution event at West Charlotte High School on March 27.

Families of West Charlotte, Ranson Middle School, University Park Creative Arts School, Druid Hills Academy, Thomasboro Academy and other neighboring schools drove through the line to have their cars stocked with produce and groceries. Families also received gift cards.

“It’s a tremendous opportunity,” said Whitney Golden-Smith, McKinney-Vento social worker at West Charlotte High. “The families are grateful for Food Lion and Second Harvest’s partnership in our neighboring schools to be able to come get fresh produce and fresh products.”

“It’s something our families appreciate and something that they need,” added Tulani Vaughn, West Charlotte school social worker.

Food Lion Feeds, Food Lion’s philanthropic giving platform that focuses on alleviating food insecurity, has donated 1.5 billion meals since 2014. By 2032, Food Lion hopes to bring the donated total to 3 billion.

“As your neighborhood grocery store, we’re dedicated to nourishing families and setting them up for success in life,” said Meg Ham, Food Lion president. “We believe no one should have to choose between dinner and rent or gas and groceries.”
