Three talented students will represent Charlotte-Mecklenburg Schools at the regional level at the Carolina Panthers Regional Spelling Bee in March. The spelling bee is open to students up to the 8th grade. This was the first CMS spelling bee held since the pandemic.
Dhruva Srivatsa, representing the North Learning Community from Davidson K-8, placed first after spelling the word “peripheral” correctly to secure top honors. Grace Cai, representing the West Learning Community from Irwin Academic Center, placed second. Emerson McVey, representing the Southwest Learning Community from the South Academy of International Languages, placed third.
For the first time ever, the Panthers Regional Spelling Bee is accepting the top three finishers to compete at Bank of America Stadium March 5.
The 2023 CMS Spelling Bee was held Jan. 26 at The Mint Musuem at 2730 Randolph Road in Charlotte, NC. Nine students competed representing each of the CMS regional learning communities. It was co-chaired by Dr. Darla Barker and Danielle Preisach, literacy specialists with CMS. Kim Cobb, CMS administrator, served as pronouncer. Judges were Darlene Pertranick, CMS elementary science specialist, Amanda Aycoth, CMS advanced studies and virtual learning specialist, Latonda Mitchell, K-5 social studies specialist, and Theodore Mueller, CMS literary specialist.
