American Indian Education/Title VI Grant

American Indian Education/Title VI Grant

The CMS Federal Title VI program supports the educational and culturally related academic needs of American Indian and Alaska Native students so that such students can meet the same challenging academic achievement standards as all other students within the district. The ongoing program provides opportunities for students by ensuring programs are of the highest quality, provide for basic elementary and secondary educational needs and meet students' unique educational and culturally related needs.

Title VI Eligibility: How to Enroll

Title VI eligibility is open to any CMS student who is a member of a federal or state-recognized tribe, a child of any member of a federal or state-recognized tribe, or the grandchild of any member of a federal or state-recognized tribe. Completing EDForm 506 is required to determine a student's eligibility for Title VI support. Click HERE to access EDForm 506. Completed forms should be given to the school the child is currently attending and sent to the Office of Engagement, Access & Supplier Development (engagement-access@cms.k12.nc.us).

Advocacy

The State Advisory Council on Indian Education advocates collectively on behalf of American Indian students; examines the applicability of state and national trends in Indian education; collaborates with education practitioners, including the Title VI-IEA administrators; and re-examines its mission and goals as school reform initiatives steer the direction of the public school system in North Carolina. Council membership comprises parents of American Indian students in K-12 public schools, K-12 American Indian educators, representatives from both houses of the North Carolina General Assembly, the University of North Carolina Board of Governors, and the North Carolina Commission of Indian Affairs.

Parent Committee Meetings

The CMS Title VI Indian Education Parent Advisory Committee (IEPAC) meets regularly during the school year to plan special cultural activities and to review needed programs for our eligible students, such as tutoring or assistance with any program within CMS, career counseling, college preparedness, and CMS teacher continuing educational opportunities. Meetings are generally open to all parents of CMS American Indian and Alaska Native students.  See below for scheduled meeting dates:

  • September 11, 2025
  • October 9, 2025
  • January 8, 2026
  • April 16, 2026

All meetings will be conducted via Microsoft Teams.  An email notification with a unique Teams link will be sent prior to each meeting.  If the meeting method changes (to in-person, for example), all committee members will be notified via email as soon as possible.  Please contact Stacey Moretti with questions regarding meetings (stacey.moretti@cms.k12.nc.us).
