Reassignment/Transfer Requests

Charlotte-Mecklenburg Schools (CMS) allows families to request a different school or program through the Reassignment/Transfer process.

What's the Difference?

Reassignment

For students who are new or re-enrolling in CMS.

Transfer

For students who are currently enrolled in CMS.


Important Dates for 2026-2027 School Year

  • Transfer Request Window:
    • March 16, 2025 - April 16, 2025
       
  • Reassignment Requests:
    • Must be submitted within 10 days of enrollment for students new or re-enrolling in CMS.
       

Reassignment/Transfer Application

 

Processing Time

Reassignment requests for the current school year are processed within 10 business days.

Requests are not accepted for schools listed on the Closed Schools List.

Forms & Resources

Transportation Guidelines

Transportation is only provided if the request is to:

  • The student's home school (based on current address)
  • The school of origin (last school attended before a housing crisis)
  • A choice, Career & Technical Education (CTE), or school option within the student's transportation zone.

 

Bullying-Related Transfer Requests

If you're requesting a transfer due to bullying, you must provide:

  1. Proof that bullying was reported to the school principal or staff
  2. Confirmation of a face-to-face meeting with the principal
  3. A description of steps taken by the school to stop the bullying
  4. Documentation of any bullying that happened after those steps were taken.
