Frequently Asked Questions
-
My student is being bullied and threatened, which may lead to trouble. What should I do?
Your top priority is to ensure your student's safety and well-being. Immediately report the bullying and threats to the school administration. Emphasize the seriousness of the situation and the potential for escalation. Keep a detailed record of all bullying incidents, including dates, times, witnesses, and evidence (e.g., text messages, social media posts). This documentation will be crucial for supporting your student. Connect with your student and offer emotional support. Let them know you are there for them, and that will help them navigate this difficult situation. Consider involving a counselor or therapist to provide additional guidance and coping mechanisms.
Empowering students and parents to report bullying is crucial for creating a safe and inclusive environment. If you have concerns or witness bullying, please report it promptly using the provided links.

As a parent, I am unhappy with my student's reassignment to Turning Point Academy. What are my options?
Parents or guardians of students assigned to Turning Point Academy may, in most cases, appeal the reassignment decision within ten days. Information about how to appeal the assignment is included in the assignment letter.
-
My student was assigned to Turning Point Academy. What are my next steps?
Students assigned to Turning Point Academy must enroll in the appropriate middle or high school campus to begin their alternative education assignment. The student's reassignment letter will indicate the behaviors that led to the reassignment, the duration of the assignment in the alternative setting, and the district-based interventions the student must complete in addition to their assignment at Turning Point Academy. Criteria for transitioning from Turning Point Academy to the student's home school include completing the assigned time, academic progress, behavioral modification, and completion of any interventions. Once a student's criteria have been met, the transition coordinator from Turning Point Academy will contact the family and the student's home school and begin the student's transition process to their home school.
-
My student was assigned to community service. What are my next steps?
Students may be assigned to community service by their home school or as part of their alternative education placement at Turning Point Academy. Community service is done in five-hour increments and involves service-based projects that enhance students' social-emotional learning skills, problem-solving, and conflict resolution. During community service, there is a session where students participate in restorative practices, allowing them to discuss the behaviors that led to their referral. Through peer mentoring, they learn how to adopt strategies that will help them succeed.
-
My student has been assigned to an intervention program (VIP, SHIP, SMART). What are my next steps?
Suppose a student has been assigned to an intervention such as VIP (Violence Interventions Program), SHIP (Sexual Harassment Interventions Program), or SMART (Social Media Awareness Responsibility Training) for violating a rule in the Code of Student Conduct. In that case, they must complete the intervention within 30 days of referral. If a student is assigned an intervention in addition to an alternative education placement at Turning Point Academy, they must complete the intervention before returning to their home school. Intervention classes are held at the Spaugh Administrative Center, 1901 Herbert Spaugh Lane, Charlotte, NC, 28208. The courses last three hours, and a parent or guardian must be present with the student. Once the student completes the intervention class, their home school will be notified that they have satisfied the terms of their referral.
-
My student was suspended from school. What are my options?
When a short-term suspension of three (3) of more days is imposed by the Assistant Principal/Dean of Students, the parent(s) may request, in writing, a review of the suspension. The request must be made to the Principal within three (3) days of the suspension. If a parent disagrees with the Principal's decision, the parent(s) may request, in writing, a review of the suspension to the Learning Community Superintendent. Students are not entitled to appeal a principal's decision to impose a short-term suspension to the superintendent or the Board of Education.
-
I thought students could only be suspended for up to ten days. What are the circumstances for a student receiving a long-term suspension?
A student accused of a willful violation of the Code of Student Conduct may require a long-term suspension or 365-day suspension from school. A suspension of more than 10 days is appropriate only when the student willfully engages in conduct that threatens the safety of students, staff, or school visitors, or threatens to substantially disrupt the educational environment.
-
What happens when a student receives a long-term suspension (10 or more days)?
Parents must be provided written notice of the recommendation by the end of the workday (when reasonably possible; otherwise as soon as is practicable). With the exception of a Discipline Team Meeting (DTM), which consists of the principal/designee, the learning community administrator, the parent/guardian, and the student, may be convened at the school within the 10-day short-term suspension.
