About Oakhurst STEAM Academy

  • Oakhurst STEAM Academy provides students with unique integrated experiences that incorporate critical thinking, problem-solving, and real-world applications leading to deeper comprehension and increased student achievement.

We are a partial magnet school serving grades K-5 in the Charlotte-Mecklenburg School District, and the first magnet school in the district to open with a STEAM focus. We opened in the fall of 2015 with 617 students, and have worked since then to provide our students with high-quality educational opportunities focusing on science, technology, engineering, art and math. We implement this focus by integrating project and problem-based learning across all subject areas, providing students with an elementary computer science curriculum, and exposing them to content in real-world contexts. With the support of dedicated staff, parents and community partners, we are committed to developing compassionate, life-long learners, leaders and contributors in a constantly developing, technologically-advanced global society.

    Highlights:

Our facilities include innovative science, engineering, and technology labs.  Our school also features a large outdoor garden, and indoor aquaponics garden, and an outdoor classroom to extend learning outside of the traditional classroom. Students are able to use our Lego Well and Media Center Maker Space to design, plan and build.

We also have one-to-one technology through Chromebooks in all K-5 classrooms, as well as a school-wide coding program. Each classroom is equipped with a projection system, document camera, and apple television. Each K-2 classroom also has a set of 10 iPads to work with.

We offer a variety of clubs and extracurricular activities for our students, including Student Council, Robotics Club, Science Olympiad, Sports Club, Chorus, Just Us Girls, and Math Olympiad. All students in grades second and third also receive Chess instruction as a part of their special area class rotation through Young Master Chess. Students also present several musical and theatrical productions throughout the year, and afterschool team sports are offered regularly throughout the year.

Our students and staff benefit from our strong partnerships with local business, health and faith-based organizations.  Education partners like Discovery Place, UNC Charlotte and Queens University have also provided our teachers with STEAM -focused training and development.

We are both a neighborhood school and magnet, serving families living in the historic Oakhurst community and other areas of Mecklenburg County.
