About Our School

  • Eastway Middle School, in the heart of the international area of Charlotte, was established in 1955. It has a long history of serving native Charlotteans as well as those who are newly arrived. Our student body, with students from more than 16 countries that speak 27 different languages, is among the most internationally diverse in the CMS district.

Eastway Middle School is a partial Leader in Me magnet school. Leader in Me teaches leadership and life skills to students. This creates a culture of student empowerment based on the idea that every child can be a leader. It also enforces the belief that our decisions determine the outcomes of our future more than our circumstances.  The Leader in Me process teaches students the skills needed for academic success in any setting: critical thinking, goal-setting, listening and speaking, self-directed learning, presentation-making and the ability to work in groups. The curriculum focuses around the seven habits of highly effective people identified by business consultant and author Stephen R. Covey:

    • Be proactive
    • Begin with the end in mind
    • Put first things first
    • Think win-win
    • Seek first to understand, then to be understood
    • Synergize
    • Sharpen the saw
