Board of Education charters two new committees

The Charlotte-Mecklenburg Board of Education approved charters for two new ad hoc committees, adopted a timeline and search firm Request for Proposal (RFP) process for the superintendent search and welcomed the 2023 student advisor at its Jan. 10 meeting.

One new committee, Student Outcomes Focused Governance Ad Hoc Committee, led by member Gregory “Dee” Rankin (District 3), will support the Board’s continuing work on Student Outcomes Focused Governance (SOFG).

The second new committee, Community Outreach Ad Hoc Committee, led by Jennifer De La Jara (at-large member), will support the Board’s effort to increase community outreach.

A third committee, tasked with managing the process for the superintendent search and the search firm RFP, is being led by member Summer Nunn (District 6). The Board approved a tentative timeline and Request for Proposal process.

“These committees lay the groundwork for the Board to spend our time strategically, intentionally, and impactfully on behalf of the students of CMS in 2023,” said Elyse Dashew, Board chair.

The 2023 student advisor is Laksha Ramkumar, a junior at David W. Butler High School.

“I am really excited to be here,” she said. Topics she hopes to see addressed include having a whole school offering only Science, Technology, Engineering and Math, adding machines with sanitary products in girls’ bathrooms in high school and reviewing the attendance regulation for high schools.

Two personnel appointments also were announced at the meeting.

Dr. Laura Rosenbach was named a learning community superintendent. She has been executive director for the North Learning Community since 2022 and was executive director for the Central 1 Learning Community from 2021 to 2022. Dr. Rosenbach was principal at William A. Hough High from 2013 to 2021 and Francis Bradley Middle from 2010 to 2013. From 2007 to 2010, Dr. Rosenbach was assistant principal at Mallard Creek High, where she also served as interim principal in 2009. She also was assistant principal from 2004 to 2007 at the former Vance High (now Julius L. Chambers High), where she taught from 1999 to 2007.

Kira Michaw was named principal at Winget Park Elementary. Michaw has been assistant principal at Lake Wylie Elementary since 2019 and was the intervention facilitator and school testing coordinator at the school from 2017 to 2019. She was math facilitator at Idlewild Elementary from 2014 to 2017 and math instructional leader from 2013 to 2014 at Walter G. Byers School, where she taught from 2011 to 2013. She also was a teacher at Steele Creek Elementary from 2006 to 2011.
