Charlotte Engineering students learn home design

Students at Charlotte Engineering Early College have been studying residential home designs from different historical eras. To showcase their expertise, they undertook projects for the school’s Architectural-Style Home Tour, which was held Jan. 28.
Engineering teacher Leslie Cosentine said the project was an introduction to architecture for a civil engineering architecture class. Two-person teams had to pick an architectural style, research it, then represent it in a 3D model, showing the recognizable features of that style. Various materials were used in the models, and students had to follow a rubric, work within a budget and operate effectively as a team.
The projects were judged by the students’ peers at Charlotte Teacher Early College. The winners were:
-
Best Craftsmanship | Queen Anne (#20) – Karla Aguilar-Karbajal, Alisson Guzman-Valencia
-
Best Use of Materials | Arts and Crafts (#22) – Nathalie Vergara Murillo, Rania Lgod
-
Most Creative | Counterculture (#23) – Gabby Hemingway, Louis Bourgognon
-
Best Representation of an Architectural Style | Thai (#2) – Dylan Kesone, Erick Hernandez; French (#24) – Alejandro Camacho Tuesta, Kabir Jani
-
Favorite Overall Model | Queen Anne (#20) – Karla Aguilar-Karbajal, Alisson Guzman-Valencia
-
House You Would Most Like to Live In | Cape Cod (#28) – Emery Judd, Alaina Thompson
“This came together in about a week,” Cosentine said. “They had about a day and a half for research and were panicked, but they know how fast it is and just keep going. This event just gets better every year.”
