Phillip O. Berry students produce 3D history

Dive into the exciting world of game development with these Phillip O. Berry Academy of Technology students as they create a 3D game using the Unity engine! This isn't just your average game design class – it's an honors-level course where students learn the fundamentals of programming, level design, and even explore the possibilities of augmented reality. These young developers are taking a simple concept and transforming it into a playable game, from initial wireframing and research to detailed 3D modeling and integration within the Unity engine. This project involves a collaborative process as students take on different roles, from programmers and modelers to researchers, working together to bring their vision to life.
They are going beyond just technical skills though! It's a cross-curricular experience that blends technology with history, focusing on the story of Charlotte's Brooklyn neighborhood and its lasting impact. Hear from the students themselves as they discuss the challenges and triumphs of the development process, and how this project connects their passion for game design with a deeper understanding of their local history. One student even shares how this project merged her interests in Black history, 3D modeling, and storytelling. With support from The Dottie Rose Foundation and Atrium's The Pearl innovation district, these students are empowered to become change-makers and action takers.
This project highlights the power of collaboration and the importance of giving students a voice. These students are learning to navigate the challenges of teamwork, refine their ideas, and ultimately create something meaningful. This is a story of creativity, innovation, and the profound impact of connecting education with real-world applications!
