David Cox Road Elementary School is a Pre-Kindergarten through 5th grade, Title 1, neighborhood school serving approximately 730 students. David Cox, located near the University of North Carolina in Charlotte, opened its doors in 1994. Our mascot is a dolphin and our colors are blue (aquamarine) and purple. We are a PBIS (Positive Behavioral Interventions and Supports) school, which means we focus on practices and systems that provide proactive support to students, which in turn minimizes unwanted behaviors.

At David Cox, students engage in social-emotional learning through morning meetings along with Literacy, Math, Social Studies, and Science instruction daily. Literacy at David Cox follows the EL curriculum. Teachers engage their students in multiple components of the EL curriculum, which include skills block (K-2) or ALL block (3-5) and module (comprehension).  In Math, teachers use the Envision curriculum along with supplemental resources to support students in learning the NCSS in Mathematics.  This year, staff members will continue to engage in professional development in our core curriculum as well as the MTSS process (academic and behavior interventions) to better meet the needs of our students.

This year, teachers will be fully engaged in the Data Driven Instruction (DDI) process.  Following unit or topic assessments, teachers are given time to focus on instructional strategies to address misconceptions during flex (reteach time) for reading and math.  This flex time also provides opportunities for enrichment for students requiring the same.  Staff will also analyze data three times a year after students take the MAP and DIBELS assessments.
