Applications are due by noon on September 20, 2022.

 

Application information will be used to create candidate information. First, it will be shared with the review panel. If you are selected as a finalist, this information will be publicly shared by CMS and GenerationNation to help high school student voters decide who to elect for Student Advisor.

 

ELECTION PROCESS FOR 2023 STUDENT ADVISOR

  • August 29                           Applications open
  • September 20                    Application deadline
  • September 21-30               Review panel reads applications and votes for finalists
  • September 30                     Finalists are announced
  • October 26                          Candidate forum (after school)
  • October 25-November 8   Election (CMS high school students learn about candidates and vote)
  • November 9                        Winner is announced at school board meeting
  • January 1                            2023 Student Advisor begins 1 year term

Role and Commitment

  • Represent the Charlotte-Mecklenburg Schools student body at Board of Education meetings and in dialogue and collaboration with school board members. The Student Advisor is not a voting member of the Board of Education.

  • Prepare for, attend, and actively participate in Board of Education meetings (usually the 2nd and 4th Tuesday of each month at 6PM at the Government Center or virtual).

  • Through the student advisory council and other methods, regularly solicit student feedback on important issues, topics, and policies, and actively share this student feedback with CMS leaders in a timely manner.

  • With the assistance of the student advisory council, educate other students about CMS news and issues and school board agenda items and policies to be discussed and decisions made.

  • Student Advisor serves as a Charlotte-Mecklenburg Youth Council officer to help lead council and strategy and have regular opportunities to connect with student leaders from across the district. CMYC is the student advisory council for CMS, city and county governments, and GenerationNation. All high school students are invited to join CMYC

  • Average student advisor time commitment is 10-15 hours per month.
