Women’s History Month: Shelby Lattimore, Teacher, Renaissance West STEAM Academy
Charlotte-Mecklenburg Schools is celebrating Women’s History Month, which is held in March to encourage the study and celebration of the vital role of women in American history. As part of the district observance, we are highlighting Shelby Lattimore, a third grade teacher at Renaissance West STEAM Academy, whose approach to teaching financial literacy has caught America’s attention.
Attendance, accountability and basic finance are behind Lattimore’s program, where students have jobs and earn “Miss Lattimore Bucks.” They learn to pay their bills – such as rent for their desks – save their earnings, experience inflation and, inevitably, face the realities of stretching their hard-earned bucks to meet their needs and wants. Lattimore’s TikTok videos have gone viral, and she’s been interviewed by local and national media outlets. Below are a few that outline more about her program:

Lattimore is a graduate of the University of North Carolina at Charlotte and did her student teaching in Charlotte-Mecklenburg Schools. She joined the district as a full-time teacher in June 2020.
